Biographical / Historical

Siegfried Hesse was a radical lawyer from California. He attended the University of Southern California and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1946. Hesse then graduated from the University of California School of Law in 1950 and moved to Seattle focusing primarily on immigration cases and veterans' civil liberties. The immigration cases often related to the Smith and Walter-McCarran Acts. Hesse also worked extensively with the the American Committee for Protection of Foreign Born and the National Lawyers Guild where he was the chairman of the Constitutional Liberties Committee. In the late 1950s, Hesse moved back to California and took a job as a legal editor at a publishing company, Bancroft Whitney. After a few years, Hesse started working at UC Berkeley's Center for Continuing Education of the Bar. He was working for the University at the time of the Free Speech Movement and became one of the lawyers for the Sproul Hall arrestees.
