    Abstract: Mario Jose de Souza Machado, a Portuguese-Chinese descendant, was born in Shanghai, China on April 22, 1935. He helped organize the 1996 Old China Hands Reunion in Las Vegas, Nevada, and invited special guest speakers from various governments, media, and business. The collection consists of documents regarding the 1996 reunion, with some additional documents, including journal articles, essays, and photographs depicting "Old Shanghai."

    Biographical Information:

    Mario Jose de Souza Machado, a Portuguese-Chinese descendant, was born in Shanghai, China on April 22, 1935. His father, Carlos Jacinto de Lourdes Gouveia Furtado Machado, served as a vice-chancellor for the Portuguese Consulate of Shanghai.
    Machado attended the British Thomas Hanbury School, St. Francis Xavier College of Shanghai, a business college in Hong Kong, and St. John's Military Academy in Los Angeles. He arrived in Seattle in 1956, and became a U.S. citizen in 1965.
    Machado was active in film, television, sports casting, and radio. He helped organize the 1996 Old China Hands Reunion in Las Vegas, Nevada, and invited special guest speakers from various governments, media, and business. Additionally, he wrote newsletters for the Old China Hands community regarding future events.

    Scope and Contents

    The Mario J. Machado Collection primarily consists of documents regarding the organization of the 1996, Old China Hands Reunion including financial records, event calendars, mailing lists, registrations, and newsletters. Correspondence to various sources include business partners, guest speakers, and important political figures such as the former governors of Macau and Hong Kong. Additional documents, including journal articles and essays; and photographs depict a historical record of “Old Shanghai”. The collection is divided into five series: Event Organization: Correspondence and Documents (1994-2000), Historical Information and Publications (1995-1998), Non-Manuscript Material: Reunion and Old Shanghai Exhibit, Audiovisual, Ephemera.
    Series I, Event Organization: Correspondence and Documents (1994-2000), includes correspondence from Machado and other individuals who helped organize the 1996 Old China Hands Reunion in Las Vegas, Nevada. This series also contains documents related to the reunion including newsletters, pamphlets, event calendars, guest lists, and financial records. Correspondence is arranged chronologically in the original order sent by the donor.
    Series II, Historical Information and Publications (1995-1998), consists of historical information and publications relating to Old Shanghai, Portugal, Macau, and the lives of Old China Hands, as well as biographical information. The original organization of the series was maintained whenever possible.
    Series III, Non-Manuscript Material, consists of photographs from the 1996 Old China Hands Reunion. In addition, four boxes of oversized exhibit photographs featuring scenes from Old Shanghai are included in this series.
    Series IV, Audiovisual, contains video cassettes and DVDs from the 1996 Old China Hands reunion. Negatives of Old Shanghai photgraphs are also included.
    Series V, Ephemera, includes Mario J. Machado event identification badges, school patches from St. Francis Xavier College, and a toothpaste from China. Photographs are arranged in the original order of the donor.
