Background
- Scope and content:
-
Transports and Battleships logbook and a logbook of vessel disasters (SAFR 18469, HDC 130) is a collection of two logbooks. This collection is available for research use without restriction.
The first logbook titled Transports and Battleships is dated from 1898 to 1926. It contains entries from the unnumbered pages through page 103. It includes an alphabetical index on the unnumbered pages at the front of the volume. Entries are alphabetical and include columns for information on date of sail, arrival date, commander, hour sailed, hour arrived and remarks. Four images are fixed to the inside front cover: a black and whilte photographic print captioned Steamer GENERAL MACDOWELL at Moore Scott 9/21/10, a cyanotype of the GRANT, a black and white photographic print of the RELIANCE and an unidentified steamer and a black and white photographic print captioned The Chief, Alameda, 9/1/01 which depicts two adult women, one adult man (The Chief, presumably) and two young girls standing around a carriage. Two younger girls are seated in the carriage.
The second logbook is dated from 1908 to 1937. It contains entries from the first leaves, throughout the alphabetical index pages (to page 27) and narrative entries through page 121. Each narrative entry concerns the demise of a particular vessel. There are four colorful Dollar Steamship Lines advertising stickers on the cover of the volume. Inside the front cover are some notations and one black and white photographic print captioned The Chief at Alameda, 12/25/03. It depicts two young girls, the Chief, two women and one young man all seated around a Christmas tree in an undentified parlor.
