    Administrative History

Under the Vice Chancellor's direction, Resource Management & Planning (RMP) provides a variety of operational and support services. This includes Planning, Design and Construction. Like all of the building projects on campus, the office was responsible for the planning of the Central Library.
In 1965, William L. Pereira & Associates were invited to design a library for UC San Diego. By 1968, the project broke ground and in 1970 the Central library opened. As the library grew, there was a need for additional space. Between 1989-1990, the construction of additions began. These were designed by Gunnar Birkerts and Associates. The expansion was completed in 1993 and at the dedication ceremony, the Central Library was re-named the University Library. By 1995, the library was re-named once more as the Geisel Library in recognition of a substantial gift from Audrey Geisel and in honor of the late Theodor Seuss Geisel.
