Laird Stabler (d. 1939) joined the faculty of USC in 1894 as Professor of Chemistry and Physics. He later became Professor of Applied Chemistry and Metallurgy. He also helped found the School of Pharmacy in 1905, and was appointed Dean of the School in 1910, serving as Dean and Professor of Chemistry and Toxicology for 29 years until his death in 1939. Stabler Hall, opened in 1964, was named for him. Stabler was considered a pioneer in the development of processes for the refinement of gasoline, and the preparation of lubricating oil from California petroleum. A commercial plant was established, known as the Densmore-Stabler Oil Refinery, to carry these processes. He was also the founder of Laird, Inc., which became Sta-Lube, Inc.
