    Abstract: Programs, playbills, fliers, agendas, clippings, notes and promotional photographs (1968-2008) collected by the Los Angeles theater committee of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) for its annual Media Awards. The annual ceremony honors outstanding representations in news, entertainment, and social media that have portrayed the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community in just, precise and all-encompassing representations.

    Administrative History

    The GLAAD Media Awards was first held in 1990 by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. The annual ceremony honors outstanding representations in news, entertainment, and social media that have portrayed the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community in just, precise and all-encompassing representations.
    In its first annual Media Awards, GLAAD acknowledged 34 nominees in 7 categories. In 2012, GLAAD had their 23rd Annual Media Awards, which takes place in three cities: Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. The theater category of the GLAAD Media Awards has three categories: Outstanding Los Angeles Theater; Outstanding New York Theater, Broadway & Off-Broadway; and Outstanding New York Theater, Off-Off-Broadway. The theater awards are local awards, and each city has its own selection committee.

    Scope and Content

    Programs, playbills, fliers, agendas, notes, clippings, photographs and promotional materials collected by the Los Angeles theater committee of Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) for its annual Media Awards. The collection includes materials from Los Angeles theater productions from 1968 to 2008. While the GLAAD Media Awards is national in scope, the theater categories are local.

    Arrangement

    The materials were originally organized alphabetically by title for each annual award.

    Separated Materials

    Program books for the 6th and 11th annual GLAAD Media Awards have been separated from the collection and cataloged in ONE Archives' collection of programs.

    All requests for permission to publish or quote from manuscripts must be submitted in writing to the ONE Archivist. Permission for publication is given on behalf of ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives at USC Libraries as the owner of the physical items and is not intended to include or imply permission of the copyright holder, which must also be obtained.
