    Abstract: The Zhao Zhenbei 趙真北 papers (1951-1986) document the activities of government official Zhao Zhenbei in his native Inner Mongolia during the Cultural Revolution. It includes materials relating to the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its activities in Inner Mongolia, such as party directives, correspondence, educational materials, newspapers and journals, as well as publications by organizations such as the Hong Wei Bing 红卫兵 Red Guards.

    Biographical Note

    Zhao Zhenbei 趙真北 (1926-2010) was born in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia. He joined the Eighth Route Army in 1945 and began to work at the People's Government of the Tumed Left Banner. Between 1949 and 1966, Zhao held multiple party and government positions in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Zhao survived the political purge in Inner Mongolia that occurred as the Cultural Revolution intensified. In 1975, he was able to return to serve in the government. Zhao was elected a member of the Inner Mongolia Political Consultative Conference in 1988. He died in Hohhot in 2010.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    The collection documents the Chinese Cultural Revolution as it was carried out in one of the China Central Party (CCP)'s most strategic and critical frontier regions, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and demonstrates how the Cultural Revolution evolved into a purge of ethnic minority groups with focus on Mongolians. It contains CCP directives and instructions in Inner Mongolia during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, Zhao's self-testimonies and reflections, Chairman Mao Zedong's instructions and speeches about China's minority group and nationality policies, CCP archives related to Inner Mongolia, correspondence between Zhao and other party high officials in Inner Mongolia, and source materials related to CCP party power struggles during the Cultural Revolution. It also includes educational materials published by various government agencies, newspaper, journals published by different state-owned news agencies, as well as flyers, pamphlets, and bulletins published by various organizations such as the Hong Wei Bing 红卫兵 Red Guards.
