Scope and Contents
This collection contains digitized interviews, interview transcriptions, and related notes reflecting the Spanish sociolinguistic
research of USC Professor Carmen Silva-Corvalán. Materials include approximately 348 hours of audio interviews collected from
1976 to 1992 in Spain, Chile, and Los Angeles County, California, with both male and female subjects in a range of ages, as
well as related transcriptions and speaker information. The collection offers a resource for studying language education,
linguistic research, bilingualism research, and technology development, specifically of Spanish spoken in Spain, Chile and
Los Angeles. Most of the interviews are in Spanish.
The collection is divided into three series: digitized interviews; interview files; and miscellaneous.
The digitized interviews include: East Los Angeles, California, interviews of Mexican Americans covering 110 hours, collected
from 1983-1984; about 48 hours are interviews with Mexican-American children, collected in Los Angeles, California, from 1988-1992;
San Fernando Valley Mexican-American adolescents interviews covering more than 21 hours, collected in 1976; recordings of
West Los Angeles Mexican Americans of various ages covering more than 41 hours, collected in 1978; and Santiago, Chile, interviews
covering 93 hours, which were collected from 36 Chileans of varying ages from 1978-1992. The audio recordings were digitized
in 2017 and the original tapes were subsequently deaccessioned.
The interview files chiefly consist of transcriptions and speaker bios arranged in series based on Silva-Corvalán's original
file titles.
The miscellaneous series contains two issues of the journal Bilingualism: language and cognition journal (2014, 2016) and
a one-page session outline for a 1993 GURT Pre-Session: Grammaticalization Processes in the Spanish of Texas.
