    Abstract: Carl Quimby Christol, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Political Science in USC's Dornsife College (on faculty from 1949-1987) was a pioneer in the field of international space law. The papers consist of materials documenting his time at the University of Chicago, personal activities, and items collected by Christolduring his time in the Army during World War II. The bulk of the collection documents Christol's tenure on the faculty at USC, and covers topics related to his area of specialization, international space law, as well as the law of the sea and roles for developing nations within this area of law.

    Biographical / Historical

    Carl Quimby Christol, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Political Science in USC's Dornsife College (on faculty from 1949-1987) was a pioneer in the field of international space law. He earned a doctorate in political science from the University of Chicago in 1940 and studied at Yale law school from 1940-1941 and 1946-1947 to obtain a law degree. Christol served in the United States Infantry from 1941-1946. He published extensively on international space law, international law, U.S. constitutional law, American foreign policy, and security issues resulting from terrorism and human rights. His 1982 book publication, The Modern International Law of Outer Space, was the first major book written by an American on the subject.

    Scope and Contents

    Papers of Carl Quimby Christol, including manuscripts, notes and correspondence from his time as a student and author at the University of Chicago. The letters are both personal and professional, are mostly addressed to Professor Christol, and reference the 1930s into the 1940s with talk of war. Other correspondence touches on school activities. Most handwritten notes and notebooks relate to school and dissertation work. Also included are some ephemeral items from Mt. Holyoke College and Harvard University, a German passport, and other items collected by Christol during his time in the U.S. Army during World War II.
    Materials dating from Christol's time as a USC faculty member include typescripts, presentations and memorabilia from several international conferences, where topics extended to the law of the sea and to roles for developing nations. Also included are correspondence addressed to Christol from politicians and colleagues, press coverage and book reviews, and materials related to Christol's awards for his early contributions to the development of international space law.
