Biographical Note

Ann Kennicott was the wife of Benjamin Kennicott, the Hebrew scholar. After her marriage, she learned Hebrew in order to assist her husband. She outlived her husband by many years, and she and Hannah More maintained a close correspondence throughout her life.

However, the letter is addressed from Little Bowden, Market Harborough, England and can be attributed to Jane West the English novelist, based on internal reference to West's work, Letters to a Young Man.

Physical Description: 37 page manuscript notebook in Hannah More's hand. Contains table talk, conversations of visitors to Barley Wood, and anecdotes. Final 14 pages used for transcribing quotations. Original marble wrappers. Inscription on cover "This little book belonged to Hannah More and is in her or her sister Paty's writing (C.B. Pigot)." This cannot be written in Patty More's hand, because she died in 1819. This notebook is transcribed in Women, Morality & Advice Literature, pages 69-77. Purchase, 1996 (MS.1996.004).
