Description
Materials include photographs and documents related to the Army Library Service and Western Pacific Base Command. Includes
photographs of library locations and librarians (including Jeanette), news clippings and pamphlets with features about the
libraries, and other ephemera. Also includes a group of photographs, not specific to the libraries, documenting military base
life in these islands duing wartime.
Background
Jeanette Sledge Rockwell (died 1975) was a librarian. She received her library degree from Columbia University in 1938 and
went on to work at the New York Public Library and the Library of Hawaii, Honolulu. During World War II she worked to establish
recreational libraries for servicemen on the islands of Honolulu, Saipan, Iwo Jima, Guam, and others in the Marianas group
and became the Western Pacific Base Command Head Librarian.
