This collection contains papers of Paul C.
Hutchison (1924-1997), a senior botanist at the University of California at Berkeley who specialized in cacti, chiefly consisting
of Hutchison’s personal
collection of the journals and correspondence of English streetcar operator and amateur cactus botanist John Thomas Bates
(1849-1934). There are several
botanical notebooks and catalogues belonging to Hutchison and Bates.
Background
A senior botanist at the University of California at Berkeley, Paul Clifford
Hutchison (1924-1997) traveled great distances from his California home in search of new plant
species. Born in 1924, Hutchison specialized in cactus plant species, and took a
great interest in the work of other botanists doing similar work. He took trips to
the Caribbean in 1951 and Bolivia and Peru in 1964 to research South American cacti
species. Hutchison died in 1997.
