Description
Album of 55 gelatin silver prints (178 x 235 mm), including two 4-part folding panoramas (178 x 940 mm), dated Oct. 3, 1902-May
7, 1903, documenting the construction of a large dock facility on the southern side of the Riachuelo near the South Basin
of the port of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Background
The construction of the main port of Buenos Aires, begun in 1887 with funds supplied by Argentine businessman Edward Madero,
was completed in 1898. In that same year, the Buenos Aires Southern Dock Company was formed in London to build a dock on the
south side of the Riachuelo, a project that had been planned ten years earlier but had never been started for lack of money.

Photographs are mounted, one to a page, on rectos and versos of leaves of stiff brown paper. Photographs (including all segments
of the two panoramic photographs) are numbered 133-193, presumably to correspond to references in the Engineer's report (although
some sequences of photos are bound out of numerical order), with identifying captions and dates in white ink in lower left
corner of photograph.
Bound in marbled paper boards, heavily damp stained; brown cloth spine, with white paper spine label bearing ms. title "Photographs.
10 1902 to...." Bookseller's ticket on verso of upper cover: "Monquaut & Vasquez Millan, San Martin 102 esq. Piedad, Buenos
Aires."
