Biographical / Historical
Frederik Jacques 'Frits' Philips, was born on April 16, 1905, in Eindhoven, Netherlands. He was the only son to Anton and
Anne Philips. In 1912, his father was the co-founder of the family business Philips electronics company. Frits Philips completed
his studies at the Delft University of Technology in 1929. He earned an engineer's degree in mechanical engineering. In 1935,
First Philips was appointed vice-director and member of the board of Philips electronic company.
When Nazi German occupied the Netherlands in 1940, Philips's board members and Frits Philip's family evacuated to the United
States. Frits Philips stayed in the Netherlands, operating several factories. Including a small factory inside the Herzogenbusch
concentration camp, near Vught. He is credited with having saved the lives of hundreds of Jewish workers by convincing the
Nazi Germans that they were indispensable for the production process at Philips.
Frits Philips worked as the president of the company until 1961. In 1996, he was recognized as 'Righteous Among the Nations'
by Yad Vashem for saving the lives of 382 Jewish employees of Philips during World War II. He celebrated his hundredth birthday
in 2005; his hometown Eindhoven declared itself Frits Philips Stad (Frits Philips City) for the occasion. Frits Philips passed
away on December 5, 2005.

Frederik Jacques "Frits" Philips collection is created by Dr. Seymour Scheinberg's research material dating from 2000 - 2010.
The collection features material on Frits Philips, the Dutch industrialists, chairman of the Philips electric company, and
Holocaust rescuer. It contains interviews of Holocaust survivors rescued by Frits Philips, including Isaac Joseph Citroen,
Bertha DetMar Koopmans. There is correspondence between Dr. Seymour and Leny Bromet, another Holocaust survivors rescued by
Frits Philips. The collection includes research notes of Dr. Seymour Scheinberg, articles on Frits Philips, a photograph,
and reproductions of Herzogenbush concentration camp where one of Philips factories were located during the Second World War.
Of particular interest is the manuscript Hiding From the Nazis in Holland by Marianne Trumpeter Dazzo. Her father, a diamond
cutter, was forced to work in the Philips factory and survived. Dazzo's memoir is a reflection of her childhood under Nazi
German occupation. With the Dutch underground, she hides in several families' houses in the southern providence of the Netherlands.
The memoir highlights the psychological effects after the war on the survivors, both children, and adults.
