The photographs were collected by James C. Schulze and given to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park in 2017.
Historical or Biographical Note
The cargo ship OHIOAN was built by Maryland Steel Company at Sparrows Point, Maryland, in 1914. She was operated by the American-Hawaiian
Steamship Company.
During World War I, the United States Navy acquired her for service (1918-1919). She went aground at Point Lobos, San Francisco,
California on October 7, 1936. Attempts to refloat her were unsuccessful. In March 1937, OHIOAN caught fire. Less than a year
later, a storm broke the vessel into two.

The James C. Shulze photograph collection, October 1936, (SAFR 24858, P17-003) is comprised of photographs of OHIOAN (built
1914; freighter) aground at Point Lobos, San Francisco, California. The collection has been processed to the Collection level
and is open for use.
Contains 5 black-and-white photographic prints, 2.75 x 4.5 in., of the wreck and salvage operation attempts of OHIOAN (built
1914; freighter) at Point Lobos, San Francisco, California, October 1936. The photographs were taken from the hill alongside
the shore showing the vessel still intact. Some of the photographs are dated October 18th. Four of the prints have a Bear
Photo Services stamp on the verso (processed on October 19 and November 2, 1936).
