    Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Joseph Kerman papers were given to The Jean Gray Hargrove Music Library by Lucy Kerman on August 6, 2014.

    Arrangement

The collection had been packed somewhat haphazardly in boxes, so the decision was made to divide the materials into personal and professional sections. The professional section was subdivided further to reflect the different facets of Kerman's work as researcher, author, critic, and educator.

    Preferred Citation

[Identification of item], [Collection title & call number], The Jean Gray Hargrove Music Library, University of California, Berkeley.

    Content Description

64 cartons comprising papers, correspondence, drafts and proofs of articles and books, etc. from Kerman's early childhood through to the time of his death. There are also a few computer diskettes and reel-to-reel tapes. This collection is stored at the Northern Regional Library Facility.
A collection of Strauss waltzes was part of the bequest, and has been detached as non-archival. These items will probably be absorbed into the Music Library's Special Collections (i.e. Case X).
