    Immediate Source of Acquisition

The bulk of this collection was given to Stanford University, Special Collections and University Archives by Steve Yost in May 1995. Addenda to the collection were given to the Library by Robert J. Wecker, and Paul B. Andrew between October 1995 and August 2007.

    Biographical / Historical

Known at its conception in 1959 as the Monterey Rugby Tournaments, the title went through several changes: Monterey National Rugby Tournament, 1962; Monterey National Rugby Championships, 1978; Monterey National Invitational Rugby Tournament, 1980; and Pebble Beach Rugby Classic, 1985 to the last tournament in 1990. This tournament was the first one of its kind held on the North American continent, from which it came all other tournaments. Teams from all over the country and all over the world played at Pebble Beach. The Stanford University Rugby team participated in the tournament and won a number of championships. The tournament was founded by Paul Andrews, and steered through most of its years by Steve Yost. The games were discontinued in 1991 after failure to find a suitable venue.

    Scope and Contents

These records, dating from 1959 to 2005, include: correspondence, ephemera, financial records, newspaper clippings, memorabilia, photographs, programs, publicity material, score sheets, and statistics from to the Monterey/Pebble Beach Rugby Classic tournament. Also included are records related to the Northern California Rugby Football Union (NCRFU) and the Monterey Jaycees. The collection is organized into five series: Tournament Records, Photographs, Newspaper Clippings and Publications, Programs, and Ephemera and Memorabilia. Series I consists of tournament records that were received in binders and folders. These records were primarily arranged chronologically, and remain in the order they were received. The remaining series contain records that have been separated by format and placed in chronological order. Of note to researchers, Series 3 includes many full issues of Rugby from 1976 to 1994.
