Description
This collection contains 200 items of the family and descendants of Phinehas Adams (1726-1779) of Connecticut and Ohio.
The bulk of this collection contains letters, manuscripts, documents including Connecticut and Ohio land deeds,
documents, personal and business affairs of the Adams and their relatives, chiefly concerning land transactions; and everyday
life in Ohio in the middle of the 19th century.
Background
Phinehas Adams of Lisbon, New London county, Connecticut, married Lydia Fitch in
1751. His son Phinehas Adams, born about 1762, married Lydia Bishop and was
succeeded in turn by still a third Phinehas Adams, born in 1796. The third
generation moved from Connecticut to Ohio, where in the course of the nineteenth
century they married into the Bennett and Bingham families.
