    Scope and Contents

    This collection consists of the papers of Serbia-born Hollywood montagist, director, lecturer, painter, and illustrator, Slavko Vorkapich (1894-1976). The papers include photographs, lecture notes, drawings, and clippings. Vorkapich was chair of the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts from 1949 to 1951. He co-directed visual tone poems with the Hungarian-born montagist and cinematic filmmaker John Hoffman (1904–1980).

    Biographical / Historical

    Slavko Vorkapich (1894-1976) was a Serbia-born Hollywood montagist, director, lecturer, the chair of the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts from 1949 to 1951 and the chair of Belgrade Film and Theatre Academy, a painter, and an illustrator. Vorkapić made several cinematic documentaries and lyrical purely cinematic short-length movies. He co-directed the visual tone poems, "Moods of the Sea" (1941) and "Forest Murmurs" (1947) with his Hollywood colleague, the Hungarian-born montagist and cinematic filmmaker John Hoffman (1904–1980). He is best known for his montage work in movies "Crime Without Passion" (1934), "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1941), "Viva Villa!" (1934), "David Copperfield" (1935), "The Good Earth" (1937), and "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (1939).
