    Abstract: This collection contains mostly photographs as well as clippings and other documents related to Suzanne Roberts, a former member of the Long Beach Chapter of National Organization for Women (NOW) and former elementary school teacher. The scrapbook is a celebration of Roberts' life as a teacher and women's rights activist.

    Scope and Contents

    The Suzanne Roberts Scrapbook Collection (1981-1986) contains material related to Roberts- a member of the Long Beach Chapter of National Organization for Women (NOW) and former elementary school teacher. The scrapbook is a celebration of Roberts' life as a teacher and activist, and contains photographs mostly taken during demonstrations; marches; national and state conferences; as well as at walks for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in California, Oklahoma, and San Diego; and at Pasadena's Doo Dah Parade. Also included in this collection are photographs of Roberts' friends; staff and students of the Roosevelt School in Paramount, California; and childhood photographs. This scrapbook also contains clippings, flyers, and photographs related to Roberts' NOW Susan B. Anthony Award ceremony; obituaries and condolence messages for Roberts after her passing in 1986; and ephemera related to NOW.

    Suzanne Roberts Biography

    Suzanne Roberts (1949-1986) was a lifelong resident of Downey, California. She graduated from California State University Long Beach with a BA in Sociology and a California Partial Standard Elementary Credential in 1974. Roberts worked as a teacher's aid for Long Beach Unified School District as well as a teaching assistant for Downey Unified School District prior to becoming a third grade teacher at Roosevelt Elementary School in Paramount, California in 1976. Roberts was a former President of the Teachers Association of Paramount and two time delegate of the National Education Association. Along with being a teacher, Roberts was also a women's rights activist and member of the Long Beach Chapter National Organization for Women (NOW). In February 1986, she was awarded the Long Beach NOW's Susan B. Anthony Award- an award that is given out annually to "a feminist who, through her actions, has contributed significantly to the advancement of women's rights" (Susan B. Anthony Award program, February 15, 1990). Roberts passed away after a brief illness on April 25, 1986 at the age of 37.
