Historical note
In 1990, GLAAD/San Francisco Bay Area launched Project 21 in association with the Bay Area Network of Gay and Lesbian Educators
(BANGLE) and the Gay and Lesbian Youth Advocacy Council of San Francisco. Jessea Greenman was a principal team member. The
project coordinated a successful state-wide effort to pressure the California State Board of Education to include fair and
accurate information about lesbians, gays and bisexuals in the State health, physical education and social history frameworks.
GLAAD ended support of Project 21 in 1995.
The P.E.R.S.O.N. Project, started in 1995, continued and broadened the work of Project 21. P.E.R.S.O.N. stands for Public
Education Regarding Sexual Orientation Nationally. The organization advocates for educational equity (k-12, public schools)
in the USA, especially via reform of curricular and textbook policies to include fair and accurate information on LGBT people
and sexual orientation. The project collects and disseminates extensive information on the process of texbook adoption, suggested
strategies to advocate for reform, and background resources and networking information. The P.E.R.S.O.N. Project Organizing
Manual is copyrighted to David Marshall, Robert Kaplan, and Jessea Greenman.
