Biographical / Historical
Maxine McCloskey was a long-time whale advocate and environmental leader. Her work was concerned with a variety of environmental
issues, and included volunteering for and editing some of the Sierra Club's proceedings from the Wilderness Conferences held
in the 1960s. As a volunteer, Maxine represented the Sierra Club on numerous whale issues through the Sierra Club's National
Coastal Committee. McCloskey’s personal interest in protecting whales led to her professional involvement with Project Jonah
and the Whale Center in Oakland, California. McCloskey was an active presence at the International Whaling Commission meetings,
and helped to establish the international moratorium on commercial whaling approved in 1982.
