Called to the ministry in 1921 while listening to Holland Oates preach at the Pacific Garden Mission, Rice enrolled at Southern
Baptist Theological Seminary and then served as a pastor until 1926 when he went into full-time evangelism work. During the
1930’s he became an Independent Baptist and continued as an evangelist, leading many large city-wide crusades in the years
after World War II. In 1934, Rice founded
The Sword of
the
Lord, a bi-weekly publication that grew into an influential fundamentalist Baptist newspaper. In this publication he fought his
battles against both the New Evangelicals as well as the separationist Fundamentalists.

John R. Rice (1895-1980) was a noted pastor, evangelist, author and publisher. He was a key leader in the second generation
of Fundamentalism, a critic of the RSV, Billy Graham and the New Evangelicals of Fuller Theological Seminary. His ministry
spanned the period from the 1920’s to his death in 1980. This collection preserves his papers in an edition of 640 microfiche.

Lord from 1939 through 2008 as well as a good number of print copies housed in Archived Periodicals (see catalog for details).
