Historical Note
The University of California Radio Service was a system-wide series of radio programs initially broadcast in San Francisco
and Los Angeles. The service, initially sponsored by the California Alumni Association, began broadcasting on December 3,
1931. The broadcasts were intended as a public service and touched on such wide ranging topics as science, health, social
issues, art, literature, and politics.
The radio service's longest running show, the "University Explorer," began broadcasting on March 8, 1933 and ended on September
26, 1971. The show was narrated by Hale Sparks and focused on faculty research at the various University of California campuses.
Hale Sparks also developed "Science Editor" which had a primary focus on science and technology. "Science Editor" began broadcasting
in 1948 and continued on air until at least 1979.
Scope and Content
Record Series 12 contains transcripts of radio broadcasts from the University of California Radio Service. The bulk of the
series consists of transcripts from "University Explorer" and "Science Editor." "University Explorer" is a nearly complete
run, but is missing transcripts of episodes 1800 - 2161. It is unknown whether transcripts were available for these last episodes.
"Science Editor" is complete from episodes 732 - 1367, after which the transcription service stopped and transcripts were
no longer made available.
This is an inactive record series; no additional University records are expected to be added.
