Description
This collection contains materials produced by the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Marching Band and Twirling Corps and collected by Steve Scholl. Materials include directories, band notes, programs, bylaws, flyers, posters, photographs, scrapbooks, and other ephemera. It also contains flyers and programs relating to local LGBTQ theater events.
Background
The San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Marching Band and Twirling Corps is a community-based concert, marching, and pep band, affectionately known as “the official band of San Francisco.” The group was founded in 1978 by Jon Reed Sims and is considered the the first openly-gay musical organization in the world. The group held their debut performance at the 1978 Gay Freedom Day Parade in San Francisco and have since participated in hundreds of community and civic events throughout San Francisco, the Bay Area, and worldwide. Steve Scholl was a member of the band and collected the materials belonging to this collection.
