The UCLA Center for International and Strategic Affairs (CISA) was originally known as the Center for Arms Control and International
Security (ACIS). ACIS was established in 1975 under the direction of UCLA political science professor Roman Kolkowicz and
with support of a three-year Ford Foundation grant. ACIS initially concentrated on issues of conventional arms control and
security in the Middle East and Europe.
By 1978 the scope of ACIS was enhanced to include international politics and strategic policy. It was then renamed the Center
for International and Strategic Affairs (CISA).
