    Scope and Contents

    54 photographs taken by Frank James Kunc (1923-1986) showing the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp in 1945. The photographs show the human remains of deceased camp prisoners, trains and other vehicles around the camp, views of the countryside surrounding Dachau, American military forces, survivors of the camp, and the furnaces used to cremate the bodies of the dead. The collection also includes a newspaper clipping from an unknown publication and creation date with an article titled "Yanks Seize Dachau Camp, Most Notorious in Germany." Lastly, the collection holds a Nazi Iron Cross medal housed in its original case. Frank James Kunc served in the 4th Infantry of the United States Army during World War II. Kunc was a medic and was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. Kunc landed in Normandy on D-Day in 1944 and participated in the liberation of Dachau in 1945.
