Description
The New York Amsterdam News and Other Press Photographs collection (1931-1974; undated) contains 66 black-and-white photographs
mostly taken in New York for "New York Amsterdam News" and other press; and focuses on daily life of Black and African American
communities. Photographers include: Harris Photo, Burley Photo Syndicate, James C. Campbell, Alex Summers, and others. Images
depict people at debutante balls, various events, award ceremonies, and gatherings including 30th Precinct Auxiliary Police,
Twist contest prize winners, Lincoln hospital nurses, children's talent shows, and others. Also included are headshots, and
group photographs of different organizations and of families. Although a majority of the photographs originate in New York
City, some are from Philadelphia, Chicago, and Indianapolis. This collection is arranged chronologically.
Background
New York Amsterdam News was founded in 1909 by James H. Anderson. It is one of the oldest African American owned and run newspapers,
and is headquartered in Harlem, New York.
