Description
The Mack Stone Collection includes letters, photographs and a journal belonging to Mack Voorhies Stone. Stone served as an assistant surgeon in the United States Navy from 1898 to 1904. He traveled through the South Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Nero during the Spanish American War. Stone’s journal depicts life aboard the Nero. His letters give insight into his tenure in the Navy. Also included are photographs from his travels and clippings from events in his life.
Background
Mack Stone was born on July 7, 1875 in Indiana. He was an assistant surgeon in the United States Navy from 1898 to 1904. During this time he toured the South Pacific aboard the USS Nero during the Spanish American War. He married Edna Biddle in Healdsburg, California in 1901. Stone is related to the Stevens family through his marriage to Edna Biddle. After he retired from the navy, he moved to Healdsburg and worked as a physician. He died on May 14, 1941.
