    Biography/Administrative History

Monterey Municipal Wharf No. 2 was constructed in 1925-1926, and began operations in 1926. It was built 1,750 ft. in length so as to insure safe berth to ships drawing 26 ft. of water. The wharf was constructed at 60 feet wide at the deep water end. Since Monterey Municipal Wharf No. 1 (Fisherman's Wharf) was mainly used by boats of the fishing fleet, promoters of the new wharf planned a wharf capable of providing service to cargo ships. The new wharf handled an extensive lumber import operation and the primary exports were canned sardines and fish meal. During the same period in which the Municipal Wharf No. 2 was completed, several other construction projects took place in Monterey. These included the grading of what became Camino Estero along El Estero, the construction of the G. T. Marsh and Company building, work on the Monterey Athletic Field, and waterfront and street construction.

    Scope and Content of Collection

The album documents the building and first use of the wharf by commercial cargo ships. In addition, the album contains photographs of other construction during this time, as well as views of the Monterey fishing fleet, harbor, and city. Photographs are captioned.
