    Scope and Content of Collection

A collection of modern photographs of medieval sculpture asssembled by the Getty Research Institute, including such object types as sarcophagi, statues, crucifixes and carved fragments. Geographic emphasis is on objects from Italy (30%) and Spain (20%); other period and geographic divisions include: early Christian; Byzantine and Coptic; Austria and Benelux; England; France; Germany; and Turkey.
Sources of photographs are scholars' archives such as those of Erwin Panofsky (Germany) and Guntram Koch (early Christian, Byzantine, Turkey); art dealers such as French & Company (Austria and Benelux); and commercial photographers or photographic archives such as Alinari, the Conway Library (Italy), Hirmer Verlag, Max Hutzel (France, Spain, and minor centers in Italy), and Zodiaque (Romanesque France and Italy).

    Biographical/Historical Note

In 1974, the J. Paul Getty Museum began assembling a "photo library" by consolidating the visual resources of each existing curatorial department. By the early 1980s, the Photo Archive was actively acquiring large collections of photographs from commercial and private sources and scholars' archives that contained a photographic component. In 1983, the nearly one million photographs of the Photo Archive were incorporated into the Research Institute's Special Collections.
