Historical Background
Roy Alvin Filloon was born in Sanger, California, in 1888. In 1910, he moved with his mother, father, and siblings to a vineyard
the family had purchased near Atlanta, California. In that same year, he married Edith Etta McLaren, a local school teacher,
only to see her die early the next year, two days after the birth of their first and only child, Alvin D'Vere Filloon. Ten
years later, Filloon was married again, this time, to Virginia Whitcomb Gibbs, a nurse from the San Francisco Bay Area. Originally
a farm laborer, Filloon also served in the U.S. Navy during the First World War. Afterward, he held jobs with the California
Irrigation Company, the U.S. Railway Mail Service, and the U.S. War Department Army Engineers. Filloon died in Stockton in
1969.
