    Historical note

Following the success in the 1980s of the German environmentally-oriented political party Die Grünen, several American political activists established the Green Committees of Correspondence in 1984. Following this national grassroots movement, several smaller, local organizations began to form, with the first national meeting taking place in 1989 in Eugene, Oregon to develop a national political platform. The California organization was officially founded in 1990, and on January 21st, 1992, the Green Party of California officially qualified for ballot status.
