    Abstract: Glen W. Stevenson was assistant to Frank W. Bireley, founder and head of Bireley's, Inc., producers of Bireley's non-carbonated sodas. Bireley's Inc. is credited with the design and construction of the first automated juice extractor. The collection consists primarily of photographs of the extractor built in the 1950s, as well as some other records, news clippings, and artifacts.

    Biographical Information:

    Glen W. Stevenson was assistant to Frank W. Bireley, founder and head of Bireley's, Inc., producers of Bireley's non-carbonated sodas. Bireley's Inc. is credited with the design and construction of the first automated juice extractor. During the time that Stevenson worked for Bireley in the 1950s, he served as Office Manager and was in charge of various duties including purchasing parts, the scheduling of manufacturing, and personnel hiring and training.

    Scope and Contents

    The Glen W. Stevenson Collection (1954-1960) documents Stevenson's work as Office Manager at the Frank W. Bireley Plant in North Hollywood in the 1950s. The collection consists primarily of photographs of the recently developed juice extractors and their ongoing modifications. This includes photos of personnel, as well as close-ups of the different parts of the extractor such as the "knife holder," "fruit feed hopper," and "juice collection pans." There are also photographs documenting different experiments such as "juice fractionation," and instructions for assembling units once they were shipped. The collection also consists of correspondence, business records, news clippings mostly concerning Frank Bireley's death, and artifacts, including an empty Bireley's soda bottle.
