Historical Note
The Gay and Lesbian Press Association was founded in 1981 as a national professional association advocating for the interests
of gay and lesbian journalists and gay- and lesbian-oriented publications. The GLPA served as "a professional trade organization
devoted to the betterment of all the gay/lesbian press media and the people who are responsible for the very existence of
a gay press... to ensure and promote ethical journalistic standards among its members; to increase understanding and communication
within the gay and lesbian community and with the community at large; to promote a healthy business environment; to foster
the growth and development of the gay press media; and to protect and defend the rights and integrity of the gay press media."
The GLPA held annual conferences and award ceremonies during the 1980s; it was also engaged in efforts to develop an efficient
electronic communication system linking gay journalists and news organizations.
