Series IV. Brochures, 1910-1962

Physical Description: 146.0 linear feet (207 boxes)

Scope and Content Note

Series IV contains the presentation brochures assembled by the firm of Duveen Brothers, which documented works of art in the firm's stock. The brochures present an ownership history and a detailed exhibition record for the artworks, expertises from art historians, and bibliographies. The information for these scholarly commentaries might be culled from information exclusive to the firm's records or might be extracted from published sources. In Duveen, S. H. Behrman's attributes the authorship of these brochures to George Henry McCall, an associate and librarian for Duveen Brothers, who prepared several catalogs issued by the art dealer. The archive contains handwritten drafts, typed drafts, carbon copies, annotated copies and lavishly bound hardcover copies of the firm's brochures.

Arrangement

Upon receipt of the firm's archive by the Getty Research Institute, the brochures were already organized by genre, painting and scupture, and decorative arts. The brochures were also organized by school, and within each school, by artist. It is unclear if this arrangement by genre and schools reflects the original order maintained by the firm or an order later imposed on the archive. The series is arranged in two subseries: IV.A. Painting and sculpture; IV.B. Decorative arts.

Series IV.A. Painting and sculpture, 1910-1962

Scope and Content Note

The brochures describe some of the most important paintings and sculptures in the stock of Duveen Brothers.

Arrangement

Arranged by school and for each school by artist. Unknown artists are filed at the end of the subseries.
