Series VI. Articles, 1829-1963

Physical Description: 5 Linear Feet
Physical Description: (11 boxes)

Scope and Content Note

Duveen Brothers assembled articles from a variety of sources, often preparing translations for those issued in foreign publications. The articles range from scholarly publications issued in journals such as the Burlington Magazine and the Gazette des Beaux-Arts to publications for a larger audience, such as articles in the The New Yorker , Vanity Fair, Country Life, and International Studio. Authors include scholars, such as Lionello Venturi, and associates of the firm, such as Bernard Berenson and Georg Swarzenski. The series comprises tear sheets, offprints, typescripts, and some manuscript summary notes, with a number of articles bound by the firm into small booklets.

Scope and Content Note

d2601

Arrangement

The bulk of the articles were filed alphabetically by authors' names, while several files of articles were arranged by artists' names. Issues of periodicals have been filed at the end of the series. The series includes three subseries: Series VI.A. Authors; Series VI.B. Artists; Series VI.C. Periodical issues.

Expertise records

Scope and Content Note

The expertise files are comprised of certified photographs, statements in the form of correspondence, reports, and translations or summaries made by Duveen Brothers of statements by experts. Some files, in particular those for Bode and Berenson, were arranged by experts, while other files, such as those for Raphael's Madonna di Gaeta, were organized by artists and works of art, rather than by scholars. These files include Berenson's albums that certify his attributions for Duveen Brothers, along with certified photographs by Bode, Douglas, and other art historians.

Series IX. Robert Langton Douglas papers, 1916-1951

Physical Description: 8 Linear Feet
Physical Description: (9 boxes)

Scope and Content Note

Italian Renaissance scholar R. (Robert) Langton Douglas (1864-1951), a specialist of the Sienese school, served as director of the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin (until 1923), and as advisor to J. Pierpont Morgan and to Wilhelm Bode for the Kaiser-Friedrich Museum in Berlin for the purchase of old master paintings. He was approached by Duveen Brothers to catalog collections and regarding attribution questions, and in 1940, he moved to New York. He married his secretary and research assistant, Jean Langton Douglas, who retained his papers upon his death. She later married Edward Fowles, the last president of Duveen Brothers.
The series contains Langton Douglas' résumé; typewritten lectures; notes; letters; excerpts of publications including reviews of a book on Leonardo da Vinci; and scrapbooks of clippings compiled by Douglas. Also present are portfolios containing folders of typed articles on art and notes for publications listed by subjects and dates.
