San Gabriel Mission Records were acquired through Thomas Workman Temple, 1960. The rest of the records were acquired through
Brother Veronius Henry, F.S.C., 1965.
Scope and Content
This collection contains copies of all the obtainable records (1770-1965) of the missions of early California. These records
consist mainly of baptismal, marriage, and burial records, often with indices. There are also copies of historical material
(Santa Clara Mission), church music (San Juan Bautista Mission), Indians Census Books and clothing distribution to the Indians
(San Buenaventura), and account books (San Juan Bautista, Santa Cruz and San Carlos Borromeo Missions).
1. San Antonio de Padua (2 reels) -- 2. San Carlos de Borromeo (2 reels) -- 3. San Francisco de Asís (2 reels) -- 4. San Juan
Capistrano (3 reels) -- 5. San Jose de Guadalupe (5 reels) -- 6. San Rafael (4 reels) -- 7. San Miguel (4 reels) -- 8. San
Luis Rey (1 reel) -- 9. Santa Cruz (1 reel) -- 10. San Francisco Solano (1 reel) -- 11. Santa Clara (3 reels) -- 12. Santa
Barbara (7 reels) -- 13. San Juan Bautista (4 reels) -- 14. San Buenaventura (1 reel) -- 15. San Luis Obispo (5 reels) --
16. San Diego de Alcalá (3 reels) -- 17. San Antonio de Pala (Asistencia) (1 reel) -- 18. San Gabriel (6 reels) -- 19. Santa
Gertrudis (Baja), San Borja (Baja), San Diego (misc.) (1 reel) -- FAC 759 (mix of items from more than one mission).
It has been impossible to obtain records of all the missions. Because of fire, earthquakes, and problems of secularization
there has been a loss of records for certain periods at various missions. Most of these records are now available through
the Family Center of the Church of Latter Day Saints.
FAC 759: 2, 4 is missing and may not have been made or it never came to the Huntington as it contains the exact information
as two other reels. At some point there may have been reels 20 and 21 containing second source material on the missions and
material about Soledad, but those reels are no longer present. Part 18 (San Gabriel) formerly cataloged as MSS MFilm 00439
and MSS MFilm 00440; these call numbers have now been cancelled.
