Description
This collection consists of printed, manuscript and photographic materials documenting Peggy Ryan Poole's service as a SCOPE Project volunteer during the summer of 1965 in Sussex County, Virginia. The materials include: correspondence, local newspaper articles, documents from the SCOPE orientation in Atlanta in June of 1965, photographs, slides, printed ephemera, letters of recommendations, applications, correspondence with family, travel ephemera, campaign materials, and newsletters.
Background
Peggy Ryan Poole served as a volunteer for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's (SCLC) SCOPE Project during the summer of 1965. At the time she was a student at Chico State College. Poole traveled from Martinez, California to Atlanta, Georgia for SCOPE orientation. She was then attached to the UC Santa Barbara Chapter of the SCOPE Project and traveled to Sussex County, Virginia. In Sussex County the SCOPE volunteers worked with the local African-American community to help register voters.
