    Abstract: The Judy Irving Film Collection documents the environmental history of the San Francisco Bay and the Bay Area Greenbelt circa 1985-1995 and consists of various film materials donated to the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) by filmmaker Judy Irving in 2018. EBRPD staff is featured in the collection and District helicopters were sometimes used to shoot aerial footage. There is approximately fifty cubic feet of materials in the collection and it is made up of original camera negatives, workprints, outtakes, final mixes, cue sheets, footage logs, shot lists, MOS rolls, narrations, masters, film proposals, and more. Formats include 16mm film, 35mm film, VHS, Digital Betacam, MiniDV, Hi8, CD, DVD, Betacam SP, ¼" Open Reel Audio, and 35mm slides. The materials date between 1977-2017 and the main subjects covered in the films are nature, wildlife, environmentalism, recreation, and education. In partnership with California Revealed, five sets of original film materials were selected for digitization. Four complete films and one set of outtakes have been digitized.

    Acquisition Information

    The items in accession JIC.2018.01 were originally housed at the Oakland Museum of CA before being donated to the EBRPD. Later, several items were added that were housed at the Center for Sacramento History before being returned to the donor and then transferred to the EBRPD. The items in accession JIC.2019.01 were previously held at the California Coastal Conservancy before being transferred to the EBRPD. The items in accessions JIC.2019.02 and JIC.2019.03 came directly from donor Judy Irving at Pelican Media.

    Biography/Administrative History

    Judy Irving is a Sundance-and-Emmy-Award-winning filmmaker whose theatrical credits include "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill", a feature documentary about the relationship between a homeless street musician and a flock of wild parrots in San Francisco, "Pelican Dreams", about California brown pelicans and the people who know them best, and "Dark Circle", a personal film about the impact of the nuclear industry on ordinary citizens. In 2015, Judy was elected to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences' Documentary Branch. The Judy Irving Collection holds original film materials from five earlier documentaries, "Treasures of the Greenbelt", "Secrets of the Bay", "Kids by the Bay", "Partners on the Land", and "San Pablo Baylands". Other documentary projects represented include "19 Arrests, No Convictions", "Thin Edge of the Bay" and "Salt Pond Habitat Restoration".
