A conference on Indigenous American education was held in March 1967, at Stanislaus State College. Participants included
administrators, teachers from representative schools with a high proportion of Indigenous American students, anthropologists,
social scientists, and Indigenous Americans from tribes throughout California. The objectives of the conference were, 1.
to promote interest among the Indigenous American adult population in the education of Indigenous American children, 2. to
involve the representative Indigenous American population in planning the improvement of the education of indigenous children,
3. to unify Indigenous Americans and encourage collective strength in the improved education of Indigenous American children,
and 4. to identify and address current challenges in achieving these goals. Several recommendations were made at the conference

This collection is comprised of oral histories of the original conference proceedings held in March 1967. Originally recorded
on quarter-inch tape, audio from the proceedings was converted to Compact disc. Also included are the conference presenters'
original typed presentations.
