    Scope and Contents

This commonplace book, a bound volume presumably kept by a physician in Great Britain, contains manuscript notes and pasted-in journal articles, dated from 1880 through 1900, about a broad range of basic and clinical medical sciences. The blank, bound volume (half black calf and brown diagonal-ribbed cloth over boards; marbled endpapers) was issued by "James F. Hood, Manufacturing Stationer, Lithographer & Printer, Arbroath", according to a printed label on the upper paste-down. A handwritten, alphabetically-tabbed index precedes ca. 480 pages of written and pasted-in entries. Prominent subjects include bacteriology, communicable diseases, dermatology, neurology, pharmacology, and limb deformities. The most common excerpted publications are the Lancet and the British Medical Journal. Printed articles contain underlining in blue (lexicon and key phrases) and red (proper names). Ex libris J. Colin Dagnall, known as an historian of chiropody; his bookplate on upper paste-down.
