Compiled by a lieutenant in the Royal British Navy, this photo album documents his service aboard the HMS L4, a submarine built by Vickers, Barrow in 1916. Following World War I, the L4 became part of the 4th Submarine Flotilla, based in Hong Kong from 1919 to 1923. The album contains 148 photographs with more than fifty images of Hong Kong, including a sequence of photographs depicting celebrations for the Prince of Wales visit in 1922, a group of images related to the King's birthday, and many street scenes. Other locations include Wei Hai Wei, Singapore, Penang, the Suez Canal, and Kuala Lumpur. Many images depict British sailors enjoying recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, site seeing, horse racing, and a crocodile shooting expedition. The last sequence of photographs focuses on exterior and interior shots of the HMS L4, including the control room, the ward room, wireless office, motor and main switchboards, the diving wheels and gyro, the engine room, fore and after ends, the bridge, bow and stern views from the bridge, and the bridge itself.
