Biographical / Historical
Hendrick Christopher Dahl was born on March 24th, 1894. Born in Bosque County, Texas. Hendrick would eventually meet and marry
Bertyce Ward in 1922. Eventually, Dahl and his wife would move to Los Angeles, California. He worked as an electrical engineer
in California for several years until the Second World War. He registered into the US military in 1942 at the age of 48. The
collection of slides reports Dahl's life and his travels starting around 1949 to 1971. In 1971, Hendrick passed away at the
age of 77 in Beverly Hills, California, survived by his wife.
Scope and Contents
This collection is approximately 4,269 Stereo Realist slides, as well as one case of 35-mm mono (non-stereo) slides, containing
233 slides. The slides date from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. The slides document various locations traveled within
the Americas, Europe, Asia, New Zealand, and the Middle East. The collection is sorted into "Baja Box" cases and are labeled
based on location. Subjects within the collection include landmarks, personal photos of friends and family, and landscapes.
Some noted recorded events include the parade of Elizabeth the Second's coronation and various years of the Kentucky Derby
and Rose Parade.
Arrangement
The collection is arranged into two series, Stereo Realist stereoscopic slides, and mono (non-stereo) slides. The container
list has been written to allow cogency to the geographic areas depicted in this collection, but the collection has physically
maintained Dahl's original order. Dahl did not indicate an order to the Baja boxes and one grey box, and therefore the box
number has been arbitrarily assigned by California Museum of Photography staff. However, the contents of the drawers are maintained
in Dahl's original order.
