Background

Biographical / historical:

Francisco Camplis, Korean War veteran, USN, is a Chicano artist, filmmaker, photographer and animator. Camplis was a founding member of San Francisco's Galeria de la Raza. He was the art director for its antecedent Casa Hispana de Bellas Artes, both of which are in San Francisco. He is primarily noted as a filmmaker, having exhibited his films throughout the Southwest and the Latino world yet his artistic talents cover the spectrum of cultural and artistic innovation.

His photographs were part of the first Latin American Photography Colloquium and Exhibition in Mexico City. Camplis, who is an alumnus of the University of San Francisco, received the MA at Stanford; also studied art at the San Francisco Art Institute. He was instrumental in obtaining full year scholarships for a number of Raza students at the Institute. He is presently producing a documentary on the Mexican presence in San Francisco between 1920-1950 and two short videos were produced on the subject.
