About all I can tell you is that a Frederick Hansen, a seaman, born in Denmark in 1883, was convicted in Federal Court in Seattle on December 20, 1922 of Maltreatment of crew by officer and served a five year sentence at McNeil. He was discharged on September 1, 1926 with transportation furnished to Aberdeen. He was five foot eleven and weighed 234 lbs.

The younger child is Victoria. Capt. Shorey was a well-known African American whaler captain. He was master of the GAY HEAD, ANDREW HICKS, and JOHN & WINTHROP. In command of sailing vessels from 1887 to 1909, Capt. Shorey often took his family with him on whaling voyages. Of the baby, Victoria, he mother said, "Victoria is a remarkable sailor. She knows all the ropes, and has perfect command of her father."

The 'M. Wolters' referred to in this statement was Manuel Wolter - no 's' on the name - the oldest son of Captain Charles Wolter who was born March 6, 1792 at Fabon, Province of Pomorn, Germany. Captain Wolter died September 26, 1856 at Monterey, California. Historical records relate wonderful tales of his years on the high seas. He became a Mexican citizen in 1833. He was the owner and master of the following vessels:

CLARITA 1840-1841
JULIA 1844-1845
EL PLACER 1848

For two years, Captain Wolter sailed from Lima, Peru to London, 1841-1843. The receipt for 600 hard dollars is testimony.

Sailing in and out of the harbor of Monterey and spending some time there, he met and married Josefa Antonia Estrada-Gomez, widow of Rafael Gomez, in 1843, and Manuel Wolter was the oldest son of this marriage.

Manuel Wolter, born at Monterey 1847, was a fourth generation Californian, a direct descendant of Dario Jose Arguello and Ignacia Moraga.

Their daughter Ysabel Arguello married Jose Mariano Estrada.

Their daughter Josefa Antonia Estrada married Rafael Gomez, and, after his death, married Captain Charles Wolter.

Their oldest son, Manuel Wolter, married Lucy Catherine Little, daughter of Walter Little, April 5, 1873 at Monterey, California.

Their youngest son, Harry Meiggs Wolter (named for Harry Meiggs of San Francisco) was a member of the old Highlander Baseball Team of New York City, later became the New York Yankees. He lives at Stanford and is the donor of this doorlock to the Maritime Museum, San Francisco, California.

Less than a month out of New York, hull down with cargo for California, the clipper ship NEPTUNE'S CAR encountered multiple misfortune. Captain Joshua Patten had to depose his chief mate for insubordination. Then soon after, he and the two remaining officers fell helplessly ill of malaria.
One person remained able to command: Mary Patten, who as a bride had learned celestial navigation from her husband on her only previous voyage. She assembled the crew and announced her decision. They'd sail on. For 55 hard driving days she captained the clipper as it sped down the Atlantic, swept around the Horn, and skimmed up the Pacific. On November 13, 1856, the ship safely entered the Golden Gate. The cargo she delivered would be worth $10,000,000 today.

SCOTTISH GLENS was a full-rigged ship, built in 1885 by Oswald, Mordaunt & Co., Southampton (yard no. 225) for W. H. Ross & Co., Liverpool, England. In 1898, she was sold to G. Windram & Co., Liverpool and in 1910 sold to A/S Scottish Glens (Chr. Nielsen & Co.), Larvik (Norway) and later to many another Norwegian owners. In 1918, she lost her rigging in a storm. She was sold in 1922 to Consul Sigvart Rasmussen, Haugesund and converted to a motor cargo ship with two diesel engins at the Vulcan Werke A/G, Stettin. In 1924, she was renamed HAUGAR. In 1929/1930 she was converted to a whale factory [ship?] in Sandefjord and [did] whaling in the Antarctic. She had many Norwegian owners during this time and was sold in 1940 to Leonardo Arrivabene S. A. (Leo Salom), Venice and renamed ARCA. On October 26th, 1942, she was sunk by the British submarine HMS Taku in the Aegean Sea, 9 miles South of Chios.
