"S.S. ANSON S. BROOKS at Astoria, Oregon May 1920
Laid down in 1918 by McEachern Ship Company of Astoria as AROTURUS for the U.S. Shipping Board (Hough Type wooden cargo vessel), work on her was suspended after launching in May 1919. Completed at Portland in April 1920 as a specialized lumber carrier for the Brooks Scanlon Corp. of Florida. She had a peculiar short rig in order to fit inside a covered dock at Eastport, Florida where she loaded lumber by electric dock cranes. In Cuba she discharged and loaded sugar with her own gear. In 1923 BROOKS was in service on west coast having been charted by McCormick Steamship Co. In 1924 renamed DAVID C. MEYER when bought by Wiggins Meyer S.S. Co. of Portland. She operated chiefly between Columbia River ports, San Pedro and San Diego until March 9, 1926 when she hit a rock and stranded off Point Fermin. Though towed into San Pedro she was beyond repair and broken up later that year.

Additional information included inside the negative enclosure: "Finally I am indebted for the two nice photos of two crews of the SATURNINA FANNY of La Spezia. In one taken before 1904 I identified her master of the time Capt. Rolando Perasso, father of the subsquent master Capt. Francisco A. Perasso. I hope to make some other identifications.

This Francisco died July 1967 and his Mate Capt. Mario Taddei shipowner in New York died Jan. 1971. Still alive but out of mind her last master in Cape Horn trade (1912/1915), the 89-years old Capt. Alberto Queirolo. In anyway the two photos will form a very valuable items amongst my nautical souvenirs. And I am greatly indebted to you.

Additional information included inside the negative enclosure: "About person in party scene aboard MCKENNA: Annie Jaegels lived in Mountain View. Her married name was Leu. My parents met the Jaegels because my father and my uncle used to haul hay down to Jaegels' landing in Mountain View. I remember the Sommer family, they were relatives of my aunt's. And these were two of the Sommers - their father, ferryboat captain, and Pete are in this picture. They were quite a bit older than we were.

A lot of them were our neighbors. At the this time we lived out in Bayview - we always called it Butchertown. Many scow schooner men lived there because at that time, if it was high tide at 3, say, in the morning they walked down to the wharf, and so there was no transportation problem When my father first moved out there, the street cars didn't go out to Butchertown - they went to Islais Creek, and that was it.
My uncle lived in Alameda for many years, but my father moved to Butchertown after the earthquake. They were burned out, down near South Park.
Most of the men, like my father, when the hay and alfalfa season was over - March to October or on into November if the farmers had hay in their barns - during the other months my father stayed at home.
But my uncle did other things - haul fruit fro Hunte Hatch, haul sand and gravel. And then he hauled shells to some fertilizer place over in the East Bay down around Newerk. But he'd take his two days off a week. He had quite a social life, he was an outgoing person who had many friends. He loved to dance, and my father said he always had all the good-looking girls. While my father was the domestic type.
In the summer before we went to school, my mother would always make a trip or two up the river. But when I got older, I couldn't go.
My father refused to haul sand or brick or fruit. He didn't want to be bothered. You'd have to put in special bins for the sand... My uncle did it after the hay season. He hauled gravel. But my father never would do it. Then my uncle would haul fruit after the hay season."

Dinner is being served. Information included inside the large print enclosure: "Dinner is Served the Italian Fishermen. STAR OF FRANCE, 1918. This was the first year that the Alaska Packers Association few the fishermen. Prior to that Salvatore Gatto, the 'fisherman boss' did the hiring of the fishermen and also provided their food. The fishermen are shown eating on deck because they did not want to be served in three messes, as were the sailors (Mate's watch, second mate's watch, third mate's watch). They wanted food served all at one time, but could not all fit in the mess room. There were three galleys aboard the STAR OF FRANCE. A 'Chinese galley' under the fo'c'sle head to starboard, an 'American galley' in deckhouse, forward on starboard side, and an 'Italian galley' amidships in deckhouse." Gift - Axel Widerstrom, 7/1959. Axel's father, Capt. John Widerstrom, was master of the STAR OF FRANCE at time this picture was taken.

Old Sea Mystery Riddle Solved

Washington, D.C. - An interesting incident was recalled recently concerning the arrival in Seattle in April, 1919 of the schooner METHA NELSON. Her skipper Capt. C.H. Weise, reported that he had sighted on March 8, a four-masted schooner off the west coast of South America, abandoned with most of her sails set and nobody aboard.

A.O. Anderson, ship historian in Washington, D.C. recently put the pieces together. He said that Capt. R.M. Altamira, a Peruvian sailing ship master formerly skipper of the bark Cuatro Hermanos, who was in Seattle at the time awaiting for command, stated that the derelict sighted by Captain Weise was the Peruvian four-masted schooner HELVETIA which was abandoned by her officers and crew 500 miles off Callao, Peru. She sailed from Buenaventura, Columbia, in August 1918, with a cargo of hardwood, bound for Callao, and when her master Capt. J. Parajon died, the mate, by the name of Coranado, was unable to navigate. The vessel began to leak, and the crew, declaring that ill-fate was following her, took to the boats and made their way to Callao.

THe HELVETIA, was formerly the four-masted schooner F.M. SLADE, built at Aberdeen, Wash. in 1900 and sold to Peruvian interests in 1913.

The photo [different from the cataloged photo] reproduced above shows the little steam schooner, WASHINGTON, berthed at a San Francisco dock, when she was owned and operated by Olson and Mahony, of San Francisco, in the coastwise lumber trade. Of 539 tons, she was built at Seattle, in 1906. In 1911, Olson and Mahony bought her from the Washington Marine Co. of Seattle, her original owners, at a bargain price of only $30,000.
The WASHINGTON figured in several mishaps. On November 12, 1911, as she was leaving the Columbia River and while on the bar, she broke down due to one of the deck lashings having caught in the propeller, after a sea had washed a portion of her deckload over the side. She drifted, her anchors not holding, and was steadily carried toward the north shore. For nearly 24 hours, her passengers and crew were in a perilous position until the tug, TATOOSH [(built 1900; tugboat)], finally came to her rescue and towed her to Astoria. She later came to Portland for repairs, and after reloading, proceeded to San Francisco. Olson and Mahony laid her up temporarily for additional work and then placed her on the San Francisco-Coos bay run, but on her maiden trip to Coos Bay, she got into more trouble and had to be towed back to the Golden Gate; later plying to Eureka. The vessel was said by mariners to have been too small to pay on long runs.
In February, 1912, she again changed hands when she came under the management of W.S. Scammel and Co. of San Francisco, who operated her until 1918, when she was resold again to the Little River Redwood Co., a subsidiary of Hammond Lumber Co. of San Francisco. The WASHINGTON eventually met her end on Feb. 15, 1932, when she foundered on Humboldt Bay, California. The waterlogged hull was broken up for scrap. Photo courtesy A.O. Charly Muller, Germany's 'Oldest Boatswain' has embarked on his last voyage. The 95 year old passed away on 16 March 1972 at the Harbor Hospital in Hamburg. Funeral services will not be held until after Easter at the Ohlsdorf Cemetery. As the caretaker of the Old Seamen's Home tried to console him as he was taken to the hospital, saying 'Everything will be alright,' he answered: 'And if not, it will also be good.' He died a few hours after entering the hospital.

On his last birthday, April 6th of last year, I had written a feature on Charly Mueller in the Hamburger Abendblatt, a man who for nearly 50 years sailed only in deepwater sailing ships. A manufacturer's son, born in the Black Forest, he made his first trip in 1890 in the Hamburg bark LUNA to Australia and the Sunda Islands. On this turn around the world, the 14 year old 'Moses Karl' acquired the name Charly, and when he paid off as Able Seaman on the POTOSI his discharge read 'Deportment, Sobriety; Ability, very good; signed: Hilgendorf.' That was the captain internationally know as 'The Devil of the Sea.'

Charly Mueller's last employment was with Count Felix v. Lucknner, who, following at the end of nine years service on his foumaster VATERLAND and MOPELIA wrote in his seaman's book: 'A seaman, not to be found again in our day, a man who knew completely all problems of seamanship.' It was the end of seafaring in 52 deepwater sailing ship, from a 45 ton ketch to the 4000 ton POTOSI, the greatest fivemast bark of its time. Their traces have been scattered by the winds, their records have become legends.

And who has written Charly's history? I wanted to do it and Charly was agreeable. We started and then he said one day in his Hamburger patois: 'Let it be, my boy. You have a mountain of work to do and when you are clear, I will start and write my fingers to the bone.' In fact, the old boatswain received as many as eighty letters on holidays, some containing a pound or dollar note, then his friends knew Charly's special liking for an occasional dish of oysters or other not-every-day tidbit, for which his small pension was not enough.

When Alan Villiers wrote his well-know book 'The Way of a Ship,' letters reached the flood stage, because Charly Mueller was at times cited as expert and chief witness of that era in which steam and oil dethroned the century-old wind power propulsion.

Twenty-four times he rounded the Cape Horn 'before the mast.' In accordance with the strict regulations of the St. Malo constitution of the International Friendship Confederation of the Cape Horn Society he was entitled to wear the 'Malamok Badge." But Charly was accorded the singular honor of the 'Albatross Badge,' reserved for shipmasters only." -Guenter Niemeyer.
