Scope and Contents note

Includes the papers of HCHs parents and grandparents, the artwork and creative writing of HCH's mother, financial documents, his birth records, autobiographical and biographical accounts and notes by HCH and LWH, material related to HCH and LWH's church involvement, material related to HCH's health, his childhood drawings, his high school notebooks, his personal diaries, accounts of his trips, and membership cards and other materials related to clubs to which he belonged. A Confederate Bill $100 dated 1864 found in envelope that reads "Ballad for a New Hearth for Clancy Hugh Shick 1951" has been relocated to the UCLA vault and the collection contains copies of these items.

Paddle-to-the-Sea and canoe. Includes drawings with holograph annotation noting "Actual size of Indian Paddler and canoe which I carved--H.C.H. 1940." Includes drawings of Paddle-to-the-Sea from various angles, including from beneath showing the carved inscription on the bottom: "PLEASE PUT ME BACK IN WATER I AM PADDLE TO THE SEA" shown in Chapter 1, "How Paddle to the Sea." Also, from Chapter 15, "Dry Dock," there is a preliminary drawing of the bottom of the canoe with a longer inscription stamped into a copper plate. Some sketches have holograph notes with "Save" on them and the chapter they are meant for. Includes an early version of Paddle-to-the-Sea and herring gulls from inside back and front covers. Squirrels, cats, and bird in flight. Wood mice and rabbits are from Chapter 3, "Paddle Starts on His Journey." Cow moose is from Chapter 10, "Life in A Northern Marsh." Buck deer drawing from Chapter 13, "Adrift Again," has holograph annotation citing August 21 [year?] issue of National Geographic. Moose drawings from Chapter 10, "Life in a Northern Marsh," have holograph annotation citing p. 413 of the 1908 May issue of National Geographic. There is also a drawing of an old woman telling stories to a boy that appears in Chapter 24, "Along the Great River." Howling wolves appear in the watercolor illustration for Chapter 3 in the mock-up book (see folder 36) but do not appear in the published book. Drawings of bucks and a mounted head of the buck that appears in Chapter 24 are in Box 1, Folder 4. Pencil drawings on tissue paper.

Also two scraps of paper and an envelope with holograph explanation of names and chronology of drafts. 57 leaves. Revised version sent by HCH to Thompson on Feb 22, 1940, and was returned edited by Thompson on Mar 6, 1940, with feedback that there was too much industry and trade and not enough adventure. After white version was returned, HCH sent yellow version to Thompson, who returned it with editor's corrections and notes.

Decorations inspired by Native American motifs. An early draft for the cover has the longer title "Paddle to the Sea through the Great Lakes," and HCH has written "By Holling Clancy Holling Illustrated by H.C. and [in fainter handwriting] Lucille Holling." His wife Lucille Webster Holling (LWH) is not credited in the published books. This cover draft shows Paddle in profile as he later appears on the cover of the first American edition. There are two other drafts for the cover with Paddle in profile centered in a decorative frame, which does not appear on the published book cover. One cover has a note addressed to editor Lovell Thompson of Houghton Mifflin Company.
