General view - note single stationary high line. Supt. says two or more towers much better. Note aggregate storage bins in rear, also mixer house in upper left corner. Aggregate hauled from deposit by railroad and to mixers by electric locomotive. Cement handled in sacks. Mass concrete mix, 1-3-6-3 requiring 0.825 bbl. per c.y. avg. all con. about 1 bbl., however. Mixers 2-2 c.y., 8 hour avg., now 1200 c.y. Total concrete to place 281,000 c.y. excl. spillway and power house 3294 August 26, 1922

Box 85

Concrete deposit method - concrete hauled in cars by elec. locomotive on steel trestle carried on completed section to dump hopper where it is timbered for unequal water content at mixers. Chutes slope 4 in. 12 relined every 40,000 yds. Trestle now being carried forward for next rise 3295 August 26, 1922

Box 85

Construction plant - aggregate storage bins in rear. Tunnel under trestle and pile with traps for loading cars hauling to mixer. Note single stationary high line tower and steel tower for carrying chute support cables 3296 August 26, 1922

Box 85

General view of concreting system - dam carried up in four foot lifts but superintendent says five would be better. Forms are 4×8 wood fabricated at saw mill and used from 12 to 18 times. Forms supported by 2 - #9 wires, 2'8" cts. Construction steps 50' long. Note construction joints and inspection galleries, also copper seal at upstream face along construction joint 3297 August 26, 1922

Box 85

Hetch Hetchy Dam, mass concrete. Mix 1-3-6 with 7% plums, Note size of plums also porous concrete blocks for drainage wells. Blocks are precast, mix 1-1-8 with 15"×15' drain hole through center. Very good results. 28 day test shows 100% comp. strength 3299F August 27, 1922

Box 85

Hetch Hetchy Dam, concrete plant. Cement all handled in bulk is brought to top of dam by railroad unloaded with Morman scrapers, carried to bins in upper left hand corner, and by gravity, through 2-8" pipes to mixers, 2-2 c.y. each, at base high tower. Aggregate secured from deposit in reservoir basin about 1/4 mile above dam, crushed, screened and washed near pits. Railed to bin by dinkies and elevated by conveyor belts to gins above mixers. Concrete from mixers elevated through high tower and spouted to location through flumes 3299G August 27, 1922
