Views Within and Outside: Chew-Doh-Ken (Tudor House), ca. 1931

Scope and Contents note

The album of thirty-one gelatin silver photographs, one loose sheet of printed floor plans and elevations, and two pages of Japanese text documents a Tudor-style residence designed by W. M. Vories & Co. Architects, Omi Hachiman, Japan for Shotaru Shimomura (1883-1944), the chairman of the Daimaru department stores. The house was built in Kyoto in 1931.
Patterned Japanese tissue interleaving with captions printed in Japanese and English precede each photograph.
The album covers are dark green tooled and colored leather with image of house on front cover. The album was made by Matsuzaki & Co.,Ltd. (Tokyo and Osaka).
The photographer is unknown, but could possibly be Shimomura himself as he was also a photographer and exhibited at Ashiya Photo Salons in the 1930s.
William Merrell Vories (1880-1964) was an American educator, missionary, and trained architect who financed his endeavours in Japan through architectural design.
